Mumbai,February 21, 2020:
The government has seized more than $500m in the “black market” worth of fake and counterfeit medicines in India, which are sold under names such as ‘Viagra’ and ‘Cialis’, the US pharmaceutical company said on Friday.
The global pharmaceutical giant has seized more than $1bn in the black market since the beginning of January, the company said in a filing with US regulators.
“The government has seized more than $500m in the black market since the beginning of January,” the company said in a filing with US regulators. “The government is now investigating the case and are investigating the details of the illegal sale of such medicines.”
A total of $1bn in the black market has been seized since the start of last year, it added.
The seizure of more than $500m of the medicines by the pharmaceutical giant came in the form of a “black market” worth of medicines that are “highly dangerous,” it said.
“The list of medicines sold over the past 12 months includes medicines for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) and medicines used for the treatment of certain fungal infections,” the company said in a filing to US regulators.
“All of the medicines that are sold by this company in the country have been seized.”
The company said that the drugs were sold without a prescription by the doctors or pharmacists, who were not authorised to sell them.
The company said that the drugs were used to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man is unable to get or keep an erection when sexually stimulated.
“It is estimated that around 30 million men in India use these drugs,” the company said.

Earlier this month, the FDA released a warning about the dangers of the counterfeit medicines sold in India.
“Fake medicines have a high incidence of serious adverse events associated with their composition. The risk of serious adverse events is higher than that seen with prescription medicines,” it said.
The FDA said that the fake medicines sold in India are not only “highly dangerous” but could have serious adverse events that could lead to life-threatening conditions.
“The FDA recommends that all individuals with the suspected adverse events be warned of these risks.”
The drugmaker said that it was investigating the case and is investigating the matter.
The company said that it was “reviewing the case thoroughly” to determine whether the drugs were safe.
“We are actively investigating the cases, and will work with the FDA to take necessary action against those selling these drugs,” the company said.
“The FDA is making important public statements regarding the safety of the products. These statements are made in accordance with the rules laid down in the US Food and Drug Administration.
The company also noted that the FDA is monitoring the cases closely and will work with the FDA to bring more information to the public.“We are committed to reporting any and all matters concerning these products to the FDA and to reporting any adverse events related to these products to the FDA,” the company added.
